oG The Rock Opera (oG pronounced like “dog” without the “d”) is a post apocalyptic tale of love, survival, courage, and a quest to find purpose and home on another planet with a society similar to Earth. This story is about a couple that survives a cataclysm and succeeds at finding love and purpose. For more, read “The Story of oG”. oG is performed in the style of the classic 1960’s Prog Rock Concept Albums and Rock Operas. oG The Rock Opera was written, composed, recorded, mixed and produced by Daniel Joseph Toth & performed by Wizard Moon:
The Creation of oG The Rock Opera (oG pronounced like “dog” without the “d”) was started in 1995. This musical story is about a couple that survives a cataclysm and succeeds at finding love and purpose in life. The music is composed and arranged to express the emotions and challenges of the couple’s sojourn to find their true selves in a post apocalyptic world. Philosophies about life are integrated into the musical story. I made the decision to combine a book I was writing with songs that I was composing. I was originally thinking I would complete this Album in a year or two. However, I had only one acoustic guitar, as I had sold all of my previous gear as I moved around the country and started raising a family. I not only needed to compose songs but also acquire instruments, gear and develop a recording studio while working at a full time career. In addition, the multiple tracks on oG are complex, requiring multiple takes and revisions that took a great deal of time in the studio. So it took me a little longer than I initially thought.
At any rate, by the end of 2022, oG The Rock Opera was ready for mastering, graphics and production.
oG The Rock Opera is told through music and lyrics. I am a fan of concept albums, and the rock operas of the late 1960’s and early 70’s. Hence this rock opera was written in the same style. Get comfortable, listen, and read the lyrics if you wish.
I want to thank the players in Wizard Moon for being so generous with their time and talents. They mean so much to me. I consider them all family. Thanks to my kids for putting up with my obsession in writing a rock opera. Last but not least, I want to thank Deb, my soul mate and partner of 23 years who has supported me with love, advice, and encouragement.
Enjoy…. Daniel
The Story of oG © by Daniel Joseph Toth
On another planet similar to our own, called Mir, in an intricate, stressful culture, Ames, a high-power executive, begins to have nightmares. He decides to get away into the mountains and convinces his wife JoDow to go with him. They hike high into the peaks, and while there, the planet’s poles shift, Tectonic plate movements create huge earthquakes, and oceans rush in to cover much of the land. Ames and JoDow survive on the highest peaks. They hike for days thinking they will die. When Ames is ready to give up, JoDow convinces him to go on. Finally, Ames and JoDow find a group of people living in small shacks who have come together in a place they call New Town. Ames then wants to know why he survived. They barely survive the winter and know they must find another place to live. It is spring and a good time to travel. Ames volunteers to make the dangerous quest over sheer rock faces and jagged peaks to look for a new home. He also wants to find himself and know his purpose in life.
With many injuries, surviving an “impossible climb”, Ames arrives at Thaeirie’s (teh-ree’s) house where he is welcomed and healed. Thaeirie breeds and raises flying horses; the baby horses psychically bond with whoever they first see at birth. Thaeirie gifts a baby horse to Ames (who names it Seagull) to help him on his journey. While at Thaeirie’s house Ames has many spiritual discussions with people who come and go. His message, that love is what has always allowed people to survive, and love will allow them to live in this new reality. The visitors leave and spread the story of a spiritual leader they have met. As Ames name is repeated, it changes to “oG” and his reputation as a spiritual leader grows.
Summer comes, and Ames must continue on to find a new place for his community; he leaves Thaeirie’s house alone as Seagull is still too young to travel. During his journey, Ames has been seeking a spiritual teacher to help him understand why he survived. As he travels people speak of oG. When Ames hears of oG, not knowing it is himself, he decides oG is the one he is looking for and must find him.
When Ames reaches the edge of a long waterway he is given a sailboat, named Dragonfly, by friends of Thaeirie’s. He is told of a town at the waterways end, “Edgewater”; a possible new home. Ames must sail through dangerous territory controlled by the “Imes” (as in I-me), who are evil cannibals. For 3 days he sails safely on Dragonfly and feels invincible. Meanwhile, during the many months since Ames departure, JoDow’s strong spirit has kept the people of New Town alive and hopeful, despite not knowing if Ames is still alive.
Arriving at the town called Edgewater, Ames is welcomed by their leader, Eliana DuMer, and her people. Ames shares the desperate need for a new home for his community. He imparts how love has been expressed over lifetimes, and love is what has inspired people to survive. The people of Edgewater decide to accept the people of New Town. At the same time, there is the growing awareness that Ames’ spiritual philosophy (To Love is to survive) matches that of the man known as oG. The people of Edgewater and Ames himself come to the realization that Ames is in fact the one called oG. Ames/oG also realizes that all he needed to do was to look inside himself to find the truth, to know himself and his purpose.
oG must again sail Dragonfly up the waterway through the Imes’ territory. This time he is not so lucky. The Ime’s chase him in swift boats, surrounding him as he climbs to the top of the highest point on a rocky island. oG thinks he is going to die. But Seagull has matured and grown into his wings. Knowing oG is in danger through the psychic intuition that connected them at birth, he arrives to save him, and carries oG to Thaeirie’s house. oG must spend the winter there due to the incredibly high winds that prevent further travel. As spring arrives, oG departs for New Town on Seagull, where JoDow has been leading the people and holding the vision of his return. oG walks the final stretch home so as not to alarm the people of New Town. While walking, oG contemplates the meaning of love. Ames/oG and JoDow are lovingly reunited with joy and tears. oG tells his story, revealing the happy news that Edgewater will become their new home.
A celebration ensues for the entire community………….
